THE GATE 510 / THE FACTORY 510 TO SHARE KEYS TO MAKER SPACE SUCCESS
AT BAY AREA MAKER FAIRE

(San Mateo, CA, May 20, 2016)— When the maker community converges at the 11th Annual Maker Faire this Saturday, creative placemaker and serial entrepreneur Cheryl Edison will share successful strategies and savvy cash tactics for creating a maker space at 4:00 PM on Saturday, May 21, on the Live Stage at Maker Faire at the San Mateo County Fairgrounds. In a presentation titled Maker Spaces: The Making of Success, Edison will share the efficiencies and systems that have guided the development of San Leandro maker space The Gate 510, created in 2014 in a turnaround with real estate investment firm ScanlanKemperBard. The collaboration evolved into a new business revenue model for creative coworking at the 24-acre property, tested in 2015 and officially launched as The Factory 510, LLC in 2016.

“At The Gate we say, ‘Make it here!’ as our rally amongst tenants and members linking art, tech and maker initiatives to commerce,” Edison said. “The Maker movement is at the heart of the entrepreneurial ecosystem across the United States.”

Edison will offer an insider look at the elements of community that supercharge the development of maker spaces, and the qualitative innovations specific to this market segment, in a presentation designed to assist anyone seeking to create a maker space and equip them with valuable keys to success.

“Maker spaces that succeed in linking creativity to commerce require alchemy to combine well-chosen facilities, commercial partnerships, and community. The people involved are chosen to with purpose to influence and support each other. Innovation and new business model generation is an organic outcome. The curation, creativity and commerce linkages are as important as space types, amenities and tools. Running a space successfully is a daily exercise in nurturing new creative and business endeavors with the goal of win-win profiting that exponentially delivers on property owner goals,” Edison states.

After careful testing in 2014 and 2015, with The Gate 510 ranking at the top incubator accelerators in Silicon Valley, Edison and co-founder Andie Grace launched The Factory 510, to focus on increasing that success and making it accessible to startups. The Factory 510 offers a place for those who have grown their creative idea past the kitchen table or the coffee shop, but are not ready or not suited to taking on the financial pressure of a long-term lease. At The Factory 510, such projects get space for an hour, a day a week, or a number of months, and enter a community of co-support that can help accelerate startups into successful companies. Grace says, “For us, success is when a project is incubating well and their leadership asks for more details for long term leasing at The Gate 510.”

The art/tech/maker community, located in a former automobile factory at 1933 Davis Street, is one of the biggest maker spaces in the United States, and occupies 24 acres and a combined 1 million square feet, including a shopping mall at ground floor anchored by Home Depot. It comprises an unprecedented curation of today’s maker businesses, including advanced manufacturing, 3D printing, biotechnology, craft beverage and foods, and creative industries. A number of The Gate 510’s tenants and Factory 510 members will also be present to participate in this year’s Maker Faire.
